A woman is critically ill in hospital after the car she was travelling in collided head-on with another vehicle on the Warburton Highway at Launching Place in Melbourne's Yarra Ranges on Saturday night.
A second woman was also seriously hurt in the crash.
Police say the women were injured when the driver of a Holden Commodore heading east on the highway lost control and slammed into a westbound Hyundai Excel.
The female passenger of the Commodore, a Yarra Valley woman in her 20s, was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a critical condition, Senior Constable Adam West said.
"The driver of the Hyundai, an 18-year-old Yarra Valley woman, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition," he said.
"The driver of the Commodore was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries."
The accident happened near Mathers Avenue at about midnight.
Meanwhile a man has died in an accident in the Melbourne suburb of Springvale South, also on Saturday night.
The 20 year old Hampton Park man was thrown from his Mazda 626 after driving through the Springvale and Westall Road intersection at about 12.30am on Saturday night and colliding with a pole.
Police believe he had been unaware of the intersection as he approached on Westall Road.
His 21 year old female passenger was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but non-life-threatening condition.
Investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.
