Two people have died after a prime mover and semi-trailer collided near Coonabarabran in the New South Wales far west overnight.

The two trucks collided around 11.40pm last night on the Newell Highway, about 20 kilometres from the outback town.

It's believed the northbound prime mover veered onto the wrong side of the road as it negotiated a bend, colliding with the semi-trailer heading south.

Police from Mudgee Local Area Command, Forensic Services and the Crash Investigation Unit are currently at the scene and inquiries into the cause of the collision are continuing.

The Newell Highway is blocked in both directions.

It is not expected to re-open until midday today.
