Seven paintings described as valuable works of art have been stolen from an Aboriginal gallery in Darwin.

Security staff at the Museum and Art Gallery in The Gardens alerted police around 4.25am this morning that the paintings were gone.

Thieves had smashed a window to gain entry to the gallery.

Northern Territory Police have launched an investigation into the theft, with forensic officers currently at the scene examining the area for clues.
