Detectives investigating the sexual assault of a woman at Queenscliff on Sydney's northern beaches are warning women not to walk by themselves late at night or early in the morning while the suspect is still at large.

Police are looking for a man described as aged between 25 and 35, 180cm tall with a medium-slim build and lightly tanned skin. At the time he was wearing a black T-shirt, grey shorts and running shoes.

He is wanted over the sexual assault of a woman on Bridge Road in Queenscliff on January 27, a Sunday.

She was punched to the side of the head and attacked at around 4am, but managed to call for help, which came from several passers-by.

The man fled the scene.
