A man has been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after being seriously injured in an apparently unprovoked attack in Sydney this morning.
He remains in a critical condition at St Vincents Hospital.
Police said the 54 year old man was standing outside a residential apartment block on Bathurst Street in the city about 12.10am when he was approached by the men.
"The man was attacked by the pair causing major head trauma," a police spokesperson said.
"The offenders then fled the scene."
Detectives have already spoken with witnesses at the scene and forensic officers are combing the area for clues.
