A man has been charged over the shooting murder of a security guard in Sydney's south-west six and a half years ago.

Detectives arrested the 47 year old man last night after he turned himself in to Green Valley Police Station shortly after 5pm.

He has been refused bail to attend Liverpool Local Court today.

The security guard, Ahmad Rashid, was fatally shot during an alleged armed robbery in the car park of a registered club in Punchbowl on September 3, 2001.

The 32 year old had just returned to his car after making a cash delivery to the club when he was confronted by the gunman.

He was dragged from his car and shot during the ensuing struggle.
