A man allegedly dumped a bum bag containing a sub-machine gun and ammunition in a garbage bin near a Newcastle shop yesterday.
The man dumped the bag outside the takeaway food shop on Hassell Street in Hamilton South after fleeing from police who had tried to speak with him after noticing he was standing outside a block of units with the bag on his shoulder.
The 30 year old was questioned at Newcastle Police Station and later charged with possessing an unauthorised firearm.
He has been refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court later today.
