Victoria is yet to give its approval to the federal government's Murray-Darling $10 billion takeover plan, but has given its strongest signal yet that that may change.
Victorian premier John Brumby said talks with federal water minister Senator Penny Wong had been constructive and positive, and that both parties agreed there was "significant common ground".
"The meeting with Senator Wong marked a significant departure from dealings
with the previous federal government on water issues," he said.
“Victoria has long held the position that the Murray-Darling system requires a national
approach. We have consistently sought meaningful discussions with the Commonwealth. I am pleased
such discussions have now started.”
Senator Wong is due to meet again soon with Victoria and the other basin states in hopes an agreement can be struck that everybody is happy with.
