Canberra Liberals leader Zed Seselja has issued a statement about his position on a Family First poker machine tax plan, a week after a local newspaper published a story on the proposal.

The ACT opposition leader said he was quoted in the March 25 Canberra Times story as saying he supported Senator Steve Fielding's plan to impose a tax on pokies to force them out of clubs and pubs within 10 years and limit them to only casinos.

"This reporting is not an accurate reflection of what I said during the interview," Mr Seselja said in the statement issued this morning.

"I do not believe that we should restrict poker machines to casinos while banning them in local pubs and clubs."

"I strongly believe that the ACT pubs and clubs play a key role in our community through providing jobs and a place where the community can meet and socialise."

"There is no plan now or into the future by the Canberra Liberals to limit poker machines to the casino or to remove poker machines from ACT pubs and clubs," he said.
