A Tuggeranong reserve has been partly closed while a new walking track is built on the mountain.
The Department of Territory and Municipal Services says the eastern side of the Mount Taylor Nature Reserve is temporarily closed from this week.
The new track - to be one metre wide and 860 metres long - will replace the Richmond Fellowship Walking Track, which was closed in June last year because of the high cost involved in maintaining it and safety concerns.
TAMS parks director Russell Watkinson says part of the problem was that the track was the steepest one on Mount Taylor.
“(It had)... a gradient of more than 1 in 3," he said.
"The steepness and high usage of the track caused it to erode down to bedrock, despite water diversion structures."
He said the builders would make every effort to minimise disturbance to the Pink-tailed legless lizard, an animal known to live in the area which is on the endangered species list.
Construction is expected to take around six weeks.
