There should be a ban placed on the promotion of alcoholic beverages in the ACT, Greens MLA Deb Foskey says.

Dr Foskey said a tobacco advertising ban had been successful, and a similar prohibition on alcohol ads could also work.

"Alcohol does enormous harm to our community, and a culture that links being drunk with having fun is a particular problem," she said.

"Life has moved on since tobacco advertising was banned. The public health benefits have been substantial... I think we could take a similar approach with alcohol promotion and move in stages by ruling out TV ads and event sponsorship first, allowing the industry to reorganise itself accordingly."

"That way we'd be first knocking off the broad brush promotions, which are arguably where the most damage is done."

Dr Foskey said some of the work had to be done at a national level, but there was still some things that could be looked at locally, such as labelling.

"So in addition to eliminating advertising, I'd like to see more emphatic health warnings on alcohol products too," she said.

"Such information is one of the tools available to public health programs."

Her call follows the introduction of tougher rules on tobacco advertising in the ACT, which now prohibits cigarette ads and displays at the point of sale.
