The ACT opposition has described the delay of a kangaroo cull in Belconnen as an indefensible act of environmental vandalism.

Shadow environment minister Vicki Dunne said it was time the ACT government got tough with the Department of Defence.

"It is time... the ACT government... forced them to implement the recommendations made by the Commissioner for the Environment," she said.

"The ACT Commissioner for the Environment has said that the population density must be reduced to one kangaroo per hectare by the end of April which means the immediate culling of about 500 animals."

"Defence has been faffing about on this issue for two years and Canberra's endangered species - the Ginninderra Peppercress, the Golden Sun Moth and the Perunga grasshopper - are more at threat than ever."

Ms Dunne said the Department of Defence had to be made to act in an environmentally responsible way.
