ACT Liberal senator Gary Humphries has continued to attack the federal government over its decision to trim public spending.

He says the cutting of $46 million in funding for the Griffin Legacy project shows the new government lacks vision for Canberra.

"The news just keeps getting worse for Canberra," the senator said.

"First we hear that 33 jobs will go from the NCA, then its tours and programs, and now the Griffin Legacy - it seems like every day this government is delivering a fresh blow to our city."

"The cuts will mean that planned work to develop and upgrade Constitution Avenue will be permanently shelved, and calls into question the future of already-approved works around King's Avenue and the Russell Roundabout."

Senator Humphries said the economic and aesthetic development of Canberra was wrapped up in the Griffin Legacy, and would now be compromised.

"The Griffin Legacy is Canberra," he said.

"It is the framework upon which the city's future development is built. Without the strong, strategic vision it provides, the development of Canberra... will be compromised."

"I don't believe the new government could have overlooked this fact."

The senator said the Labor government did not care because Canberra was one of the safest Labor seats in the country.
