Queanbeyan City Council has criticised the 2008 preliminary draft master plan for Canberra Airport, declaring it leaves out key information about aircraft noise.
Queanbeyan mayor Frank Pangallo said airport authorities were being "extremely selective" in the information included in the document.
In a statement on the council's website, he said it failed to note Queanbeyan's decision to not support changes in aircraft approaches, as well as a letter from then special minister of state Gary Nairn on the issue.
“The Plan continues the Airport’s long standing campaign that noise sharing is a real possibility if development in South Jerrabomberra proceeds,” he said.
“It seems to be designed to create fear within the wider Canberra community as well as to divert attention from the Airport’s plans to encourage a massive increase in air traffic movements, particularly at night.”
Mayor Pangallo said the letter from Gary Nairn to Queanbeyan - written on December 6, 2006 - said Airservices Australia would not need to reconsider noise abatement areas over Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Canberra as a result of residential development in the Tralee area.
"It is my view that flight paths into and out of Canberra Airport should remain as negotiated over the past few years," Mr Nairn wrote.
"The only changes likely in the future would be with respect to GPS landings and in that respect current Noise Abatement Areas would not need to be changed.”
Mayor Pangallo also said the plan gave incorrect information on where development would be occuring at Tralee.
"The... Plan’s commentary on noise sharing continues to talk about residential development at Tralee and the Poplars," he said.
"However it fails to mention that no residential development will occur on the Poplars and 130 hectares of Tralee will be developed as employment land. This has been public knowledge since May 2007 with the release of the Minister of Planning’s endorsement of the Queanbeyan Residential and Economic Strategy 2031."
The draft master plan is on public display at Canberra Airport and on the company's website.
Comment is being sought from Canberra Airport.
