Thirty new signs with a series of road safety messages are being installed around Canberra this week, the ACT government has confirmed.

The signs warn drivers about speeding, tailgating, drink driving and wearing seatbelts, as well as urging tired drivers to rest.

Municipal services minister John Hargreaves said it was up to drivers to take notice of the messages.

"Road safety is no accident," he said.

“The ACT generally has a good road safety record in comparison to other parts of Australia and other parts of the world, but there is no reason to be complacent."

There are about 7000 on-road accidents in the ACT each year, with an economist cost to the community of $180 million.
